Finding Happiness In Your Work

There is more to work than just paying your dues from nine to five working out the daily grind. So, if you're going to spend an average of eight to twelve hours exerting energy on a task or two, you must find ways to enjoy it! Here are a few:

1. Choose to delight in your work. It's important to have a positive attitude towards work and reject a critical and complaining one. This means you must make a deliberate choice to be satisfied with your work. There are no perfect jobs because there are no perfect people. It is unrealistic to believe that the grass will be greener in another department or company. Job satisfaction involves choosing to commit to and be in harmony with your work by consistently carrying out your duties and responsibilities. 3. Work smart as well as hard. Hard work can give meaning and purpose to life. When you work hard, you use your whole being--mind, body, and spirit. Working hard includes a total focus of personality, skill, and intellect--all parts of the body working in harmony to accomplish a task. You know that you have worked hard, when at the end of the task, there is a balanced result of sweet exhaustion and satisfaction of completion.

I heard this the other night at a "Tea Party" given be the Tzu Chi Foundation. One of my daughters was in a group receiving scholarship awards from this group and my wife & I were there as guests. It was a wonderful event put on by a gracious and caring group of people.

After the ceremony, there was a chance to mingle with the Tzu Chi members. One of the women members was telling me about the founder, Cheng Yen who started the organization in Taiwan over 40 years ago. It was Cheng Yen who asked the question "Why Punish Yourself.....". It really struck me.

I had to stop and wonder, where has being mad or upset taken me off task or made me less effective. Many times we all let others effect us in negative ways. This simple question shifts the perspective completely around. So Simple yet So Powerful.

Stop for a moment and think of a time where someone upset you. What really happened to set you in motion? How did you feel? What happened to your effectiveness? Your focus and clarity? How did this impact your relationships with others?

I know my answers to these questions. And it is me who loses out. Me who becomes ineffective. Me who loses focus, energy and vitality. Its me who pays the price. So why am I punishing myself for the other person's faults?

Try this - next time you find yourself upset with someone or something someone has done. Pause and ask yourself, "Why am I punishing myself for their faults?" Let it sink in. Before Dell bought AlienWare I had a long meeting with them to explore something I’d run into that I’d found curious. Large groups in enterprise-class companies and national government were buying lots of gaming machines and servers from AlienWare.

If you're anything like I am, you remember back when you were a child, when ice cream—and candy and soda pop and potato chips and popcorn and cake and pie—were real, and relatively rare, treats. And since they were few and far between, when we did get them, we savored them with relish, often saving the "icing" (the best part) until last. For most of us, these treats never were a part of everyday life. Or, in families where they were eaten daily, they were meted out sparingly, and only after "you finish your dinner." (And if we didn't finish our dinner, there was no treat, and no amount of begging or cajoling would change our parents' minds.) I think it was better then, because we were thus rewarded for good actions and deprived of any reward for lack of good actions. Today these former "treats" are nonexistent. Oh, the sweets are still around, but they're no longer considered treats. They are mainstays of our overindulgent society. I cannot but help thinking that this is just one more sign of the extremism extant in our most affluent society. The Bible says to do all things in moderation. Once again, having departed from yet another biblical principle, the results are nothing short of disastrous to our children. So, even though the "treats" are gone, the overindulgence of our little ones has resulted in a horrifying percentage of them being obese. Parking spaces and riding grocery carts for the "handicapped" are phenomena we've seen creep into our daily lives as one result. Sadly, the ill health of our children, teens, and young people is another. This is yet one more social issue that needs to be addressed before we become a nation of invalids. Any suggestions out there?

All this will probably depress you to the point of assisted suicide, but at least you had 10 minutes of freedom.
3. Daytime television is some of the most exciting and captivating television around. You'll wonder how you ever survived without all those quality soap operas, daytime talk shows, and judge shows where you get the sinking suspicion that the judge has been paid off. President Bush has referred to Jim Gilchrist as a “Vigilante.” Many American citizens have an opposite view, calling him a Patriot. The vast majority of Republican voters want the problem of a tidal wave of illegal aliens pouring across our borders solved, not swept under the rug! Their reasons for concern range from potential terrorist threats, and fears of the importation of vicious gang violence, as well as the adverse economic impact on wages and employment opportunities of illegal immigration.
Gilchrist is the widely known founder of the Minuteman Project, (www.jimgilchrist.com) which has mobilized the participation of thousands of volunteers who have taken up stations along the U.S. border in an attempt to reduce the numbers of illegal migrants crossing the border. Although the Minutemen’s direct impact in reducing illegal immigration could be viewed as negligible, there can be no argument as to whether their “watch and report” mission has raised this troubling issue to the forefront of political debate.
Most citizens of California are acutely aware of the rise in violent crime implicated in gang related activities. The state has experienced a dramatic increase in gang violence and “syndicated crime” due to illegal immigration, which has risen to epidemic proportions. The LA Times reported that more than 50,000 illegal aliens with serious criminal records were deported in the last twelve years alone, including untold numbers of gang members.
"One thing is clear, illegal immigration is directly feeding significant increases in felony-level crime and gang-related violence," Gilchrist said. "While the economic consequences of our broken borders have been severe, the alarming rise of crime and violence resulting from the uncontrolled growth of these gangs directly threatens our neighborhoods, our schools, and every aspect of security necessary to our society’s well-being," said Gilchrist.
The MS-13 gang, which is comprised principally of Central Americans, nearly all of whom are illegals, has grown to 50,000 members and is increasing. MS-13, with its signature machete executions, is involved in appalling street violence, racketeering, and many other crimes from coast to coast.
What troubles Gilchrist the most is the blind eye cast by Republican leadership towards these crucial issues of illegal “invasion” by foreign nationals, and the security threat it poses to American territorial integrity. Critics inside and outside of the party attribute this lack of political will, code word for “courage,” to concerns by some politicians who fear the loss of an emerging “Hispanic voting block” come election time.
Gilchrist, who is a candidate in the upcoming December 6 special election to fill the vacancy in California's 48th Congressional District, blasted the National Republican Senate Campaign for circulating a "Senate Leadership Survey" that omits any questions which refer to illegal immigration or border security.
"How can any survey, which purports to address the major political issues facing America, be taken seriously if it does not include a single question on the issues of illegal immigration or border security?" asked Gilchrist.
The answer may lie in these eye opening statistics. The number of Hispanics now residing in the United States has risen past 40 million, out-numbering African Americans as a potential voting block. Political insiders on both sides of the political spectrum believe that the future of national elections may very well rest in the hands of Hispanic voters. Consider that the winner of Florida, Texas, and California presidential contests could virtually lock up every future election.
Gilchrist believes that 90 percent of illegal immigrants are coming to the U.S. to exploit an economic situation vastly more advantageous than that left behind in their native countries. Clearly, he says, their reasons for coming here are related directly to what is happening socially, economically and politically in their nations of origin. In one interview, Gilchrist targeted Mexico by name stating that, “There is something seriously wrong in a country where half its population is trying to escape.” Gilchrist believes it is imperative that strong actions be taken by the governments of countries south of the border to improve the living standards of their own populations. America, says Gilchrist, cannot continue as the economic safety valve for every oligarchy and petty tyranny on earth. We need to stay economically strong, while sustaining America’s national unity upon the principles of western civilization.
The 48th Congressional District, located in Orange County, California, is thought of as one of the bastions of the Republican Party. Gilchrist, who is running as an Independent, has shaken the confidence of his Republican opponent, by building strong support among many Grand Old Party members who feel that the party is missing the boat on the issue of immigration.
Is Gilchrist going to be a surprise winner in the 48thDistrict, much like former Governor Jesse Ventura was in 1998? In one of the more unforeseen upsets in American political history, Reform Party candidate Jesse "The Body" Ventura, once a pro wrestler known for his spoiler tactics in the ring, shocked the pundits and his two rivals -- Democrat Hubert Humphrey III and Republican Norm Coleman -- to win Minnesota's governorship. It may be the right time again in U. S. history for an upset by an Independent challenger, this time to create a mandate for stiffening the U.S. border. Is there Science Behind the Growing Brain Fitness Industry?

To address this question, we interview today Dr. Elkhonon Goldberg, one of the earliest proponents of the Brain Fitness and Exercise field. He is a clinical professor of neurology at New York University School of Medicine, and author of The Executive Brain: Frontal Lobes and the Civilized Mind and The Wisdom Paradox: How Your Mind Can Grow Stronger As Your Brain Grows Older.
Alvaro Fernandez (AF): We are witnessing the birth of a whole new brain training industry. I understand that one of the key foundations is the new neuroimaging techniques we have today.
Elkhonon Goldberg (EG): Precisely. It is often said that new neuroimaging methods have changed neuroscience in the same way that the telescope changed astronomy. We use MRI, PET, SPECT, fMRI and MEG. None of these techniques is perfect, but used properly they provide us with a much better understanding than we had only 30 years ago.
AF: Please tell us about your main research and practical interests.
EG: As you can see in my papers and books, I will categorize them in 3 areas-a) computer-based cognitive training/ Brain Fitness overall, b) healthy cognitive aging, and c) frontal lobes and executive functions.
First, Cognitive Training/ Brain Fitness. Rigorous and targeted cognitive training has been used in clinical practice for many years. It can help improve memory, attention, confidence and competence, reasoning skills, even how to reduce anxiety and deal with uncomfortable situations.
Second, healthy cognitive aging. The brain evolves as we age. Some areas, such as pattern recognition, get better with age. Some require extra-workouts in order to reduce "chinks in the armor" and increase neuroprotection through the Cognitive Reserve. Hence, the need for targeted cognitive training.
Third, the Frontal lobes and executive functions, which permeate seemingly very different problems such as ADHD and Alzheimer's, are critical for our identity and successful daily functioning so they require extra attention.
AF: Please tell us more about what the Frontal Lobes are.
EG: We researchers typically call them the Executive Brain. The prefrontal cortex is young by evolutionary terms, and is the brain area critical to adapt to new situations, plan for the future, and self-regulate our actions in order to achieve long-term objectives. We could say that that part of the brain, right behind our forehead, acts as the conductor of an orchestra, directing and integrating the work of other parts of the brain.
I provide a good example in The Executive Brain, where I explain how I was able to organize my escape from Russia into the US.
Significantly, the pathways that connect the frontal lobes with the rest of the brain are slow to mature, reaching full operational state between ages 18 and 30, or maybe even later. And, given that they are not as hard-wired as other parts of the brain, they are typically the first areas to decline.
AF: And is that one of the areas where cognitive training/ Brain Fitness Programs can help.
EG: Yes. Most programs I have seen so far are better at training other brain areas, which are also very important, but we are getting there. Some of the spectacular research and clinical findings of the last 20 years that remain to be discovered by the population at large are that we enjoy lifelong brain plasticity and neurogenesis, that the rate of development of new neurons can be influenced by cognitive activities, and that intense mental challenges provide extra resistance to aging.
Exercising our brains systematically ways is as important as exercising our bodies. In my experience, "Use it or lose it" should really be "Use it and get more of it". And computer-based programs are proving to be a great vehicle for that "Use It".
AF: We have been talking mostly about cognition or "thinking". What about the role of emotions, as shown by the great research by Damasio?
EG: Great question. Until recently, emotions were simply not relevant for many cognitive neuroscientists. That is changing, and there is more and more research looking into what makes us "uniquely human": attributes like motivation, judgment, empathy, insight into others, emotional self-regulation.
AF: how does that link into the role of art? Can we consider art creation and appreciation as brain exercise?
EG: This is still open territory, but my personal opinion is that art's main purpose is in fact exercising brains. I wouldn't be surprised if piano lessons were shown to improve overall sharpness and lucidity. Any activity changes the brain, and systematic programs can be designed to lead that change in a better way than random daily activities. Learning a complex skill such as learning the piano helps train and develop some parts of the brain. Well-designed computer-programs help train and develop other parts.

We all desire to have true self confidence in all areas of our life. Like most things we want, it is always tempting to choose the path of least resistence. Unfortunately, this method will often cause disappointment and confusion in the long term. Self confidence is not difficult to obtain once you have the right formula. Better yet, true self confidence will become a fabric of you once you start developing the three main pillars.
The first pillar of self confidence is education. My first instinct to acquiring self confidence was to read books and listen to CDs about it. I gained my best eduation on self confidence by asking experts in their fields how they obtained it. The best educational foundation for self confidence is a combination of books, CDs and other's personal experiences. The most important step in the education process was to only apply my learning to one area of my life. For example, I wanted self confidence in my profession which was sales and marketing. I read books on finding prospects and closing deals. I also asked the most successful marketing and sales professionals how they handled certain situations. Be specific when you start the learning process. Self confidence is something we desire in every area of our life. Amazingly, once you start to educate yourself in a specific context, you will see that you can apply it to all areas of your life.
The second ingredient of self confidence is experience through action. A more direct way to state this is take action. We have all been guilty of educating ourselves and suddenly realizing we have made a great discovery. The problem that most of us have is once we acquire the information we fail to take action on it. I will be the first to admit this. Do the action that will bring you confidence. If you are in sales and you have a problem closing deals with your prospects, ask for the sale. If you want to ask out some one on a date, simply ask for the date. Remember, the result is not what is important. In the short term, it does not matter if the person says yes or no. If you do get a yes, your self confidence will immediately get a boost. If you get a no, you will gain valuable experience that will help you the next time you ask. Failure is the most important element of experience. Read this sentence again. Those with the greatest self confidence still fail more often in their life than succeed. Accept failure as a stepping stone to unwavering self confidence. The reason is once true self confidence is attained; once one becomes comfortable with failure, the mind will start to look for the opportunity in everything.
The third pillar is faith. Faith is that power that can not be measured like education and experience. Faith is an ingredient, when accepted, that will take you to higher levels not even imagined. I am not talking about blind faith. I am talking about educated, prepared and confident faith. True faith will be accomplished when you take action against your fears. You will know when you have real faith because you will thirst the knowledge, experiences and situations you once dreaded. You will be master of your emotions no longer fearing failure. Your faith will drive you through these fear thoughts. They will no longer be looked at as barriers but rather simple challenges that will only make you better in the long term.
Remember that all three pillars of self confidence have to be practiced and executed consistently. Faith breeds action. Faith is a necessity to taking consistent action. Education without action is worse than not learning in the first place. If you do not take action, you will not learn. Work on all three pillars simultaneously in your daily life now and take the first step to true self confidence.

I have found that most people want to enjoy wine, but that many of them just feel frustrated and confused by all the jargon and pomp and circumstance. I believe learning about wine should be simple, without attitude and above all else, lots of fun! So here are my 5 secrets to ordering a great bottle of wine every time:
• Ask the sommelier or server for suggestions. Most are eager to help and have tasted most (if not all) of the wines on their list. Those of us who have chosen wine as a career enjoy drinking wine every night but don’t necessarily have large budgets. Sommeliers and servers will know the best bargains because that is what we are drinking at home!
• If you are on a budget but don’t want the client to know that, point out a wine in your price range and then for an alternate suggestion. Any good server will recommend something within $10 of the wine you pointed out. Don’t go for the least expensive bottle however; look for the second or third level wines. The lowest priced wines are actually marked up the most sometimes 4 or 5 times cost whereas higher priced wines might only be marked up 2 times cost.
• Let’s face it we are not experts in French, Spanish or Italian but that doesn’t stop us from enjoying the wine right? If you find a great wine you want to order but are afraid to pronounce it, look for the Bin Number listed to the left of the wine. Many restaurants use these as a method to organize their wine inventory. If the list does not list bin numbers then point to the wine in question and any astute server will get the message.
• Resist the temptation to order the cult favorites like Opus One or other highly sought after wines with name recognition. These wines are expensive because like Gucci or Cartier the brand’s status is part of what you are paying for. Many times you can find wines that are similar in quality for much less especially if you are willing to try lesser known grape varietals or regions. Ask your sommelier or server they will be able to recommend the best buys.
• Try to taste as much as you can at home or at free in-store tastings. Retail wines are usually only marked up 30-50% over cost as opposed to the standard 2-3 times cost markup at a restaurant. Experimenting at home will give you the experience to order great wine you’ll love when you are out!
